Indianola Senior Pictures | Dylan's Session at Indianola Pier

Some locations are just pretty backdrops. Indianola Pier is that for Dylan, but as a Kingston High School graduate, it's also a place he grew up near and spent a lot of time at with his family. Getting to do his senior pictures somewhere that actually means something to him made this session feel different from the start, and that kind of personal connection always comes through in the photos.

The evening was dark and overcast in the best Pacific Northwest way. Indianola Pier sits on an open stretch of water with a wide sky above it, and on a cloudy evening that openness gives you this soft, creamy, even light that is beautiful for senior portraits. The muted tones of the beach and the water gave the whole session a calm, quiet feel that matched the location perfectly.

We moved through a few different spots over the course of the session. The beach gave us wide open shots with that big sky and water in the background. Under the pier had a completely different energy, more textured and framed, with the structure of the pier overhead adding something architectural to the images. Then up on the pier itself opened everything back up again with longer sightlines and the water stretching out behind him.

Dylan came with one outfit and it was a strong choice. A black long sleeve button up and black slacks against the lighter overcast scenery and the pale tones of the beach and water created this really bold contrast. Where a lot of senior sessions use color to stand out against a neutral backdrop, Dylan let the all-black do that work, and it gave the photos a more dramatic, confident feel that suited him well.
