Senior Photo Tips for Girls Who Don't Usually Dress Up
You don't have to be a girly-girl to feel confident and put-together in your senior photos. Here are simple, low-effort ways to elevate your natural look without doing anything that feels forced or unlike you.
I wish I could say I'm a girly-girl, but honestly, I struggle. Hair, makeup, picking an outfit that looks right, doing my own nails, all of it. I was the kid smacking myself in the head with a hairbrush trying to figure out a new hairstyle. Stereotypically girly things just don't come naturally to me, and if that's you too, I get it.
That said, I still wanted to feel and look good in my photos, so I found simple ways to elevate my natural look without it being difficult to pull off or feeling like I wasn't myself. That's what I'm sharing here. Everyone deserves to feel pretty in their senior pics, and none of this requires becoming someone you're not.
You don't have to do any of these things. These are only if you want to, and if it sounds fun to you.
Wear a Fancier Version of What You'd Normally Wear
If you don't normally wear dresses or skirts, you don't have to wear one just because it's your senior session. If you want to, go for it. But if it's not your thing, don't force it, since any discomfort tends to show up in your photos.
Instead, take your normal go-to outfit and make it a little fancier. If you live in t-shirts and jeans, wear your favorite pair of jeans with a nicer top instead of a plain tee. A standard boxy t-shirt usually doesn't do much for your photos unless it's a meaningful one, like a college shirt or a team jersey, in which case it works great as a bonus outfit. A simple, form-fitting top with a little bit of detail goes a long way.
Wear Clothes You Can Actually Move In
This one matters more than people think. If your outfit is stiff, itchy, or too tight, you'll be thinking about it the whole time instead of relaxing, and that tension shows up in your photos. Before your session, move around in your outfit at home. Sit down, walk, reach your arms up. If you're constantly adjusting something, it's probably not the right choice.
Comfort isn't just a nice-to-have, it's one of the easiest ways to make sure your photos look natural instead of stiff.
Try a Simple Clear-Polish Manicure
You don't need a full manicure for your session, but a simple clear coat goes a long way. If your hands are a little rough from sports, work, or hobbies, a quick trip to a nail salon for the simplest manicure with clear or neutral polish will clean up your cuticles and shape your nails evenly. If your hands are already in decent shape, you can do this at home with clippers, a file, and a clear top coat.
I am professionally bad at painting my nails. My non-dominant hand always comes out uneven and messy. Clear polish is the one thing I can't mess up, because there's nothing to see if it's uneven. It's basically foolproof.
This matters because there are almost always a few close-up shots in your gallery, holding a college pendant, touching your face, holding flowers, where your hands are visible. Neat nails mean no one even notices them. Unkempt nails draw the eye.
Try a Tinted Moisturizer Instead of Full Makeup
You don't need to wear makeup to look beautiful in your senior photos. But cameras do tend to pick up on blemishes, uneven skin tone, and dark circles more than they show up in real life. I can fix a lot of that in editing, but the easiest fix starts before the camera.
I have rosacea, so I deal with redness and uneven tone myself. A tinted moisturizer, especially one with SPF, evens things out without the work of a full foundation routine. You just rub it in like normal moisturizer. It's light enough that you likely won't need contour or blush on top, and it won't feel like you're wearing makeup at all.
Add Chapstick and Mascara
Two small additions make a noticeable difference. Tinted, or even clear, chapstick, applied for a few days leading up to your session to avoid dry or peeling lips, adds shine and a little natural color without looking done-up. If you're on the paler side, you can even dab a bit on your cheeks for a barely-there blush.
Mascara is the easiest way to make your eyes pop without committing to a full eye makeup routine. Classic black, a shade that matches your natural lashes, or even clear mascara for a little definition and gloss all work. Skip waterproof formulas so it's easy to remove with just soap and water (unless your session falls on a super hot day, then go with waterproof so it doesn’t sweat off!).
Wear Your Best Colors
One of the easiest ways to look your best in photos without changing anything about your personality or style is to wear colors that actually work for your skin tone. The right colors make your skin look brighter and more even, and the wrong ones can wash you out or make you look tired, even on a good day.
There are two easy ways to figure out your best colors. You can get a professional color analysis done, where a stylist evaluates your skin tone, eye color, and hair color to tell you which palettes suit you best. Or, if you'd rather not pay for that, you can do some research yourself. There's a lot of free information online about the seasonal color analysis system (warm/cool, spring/summer/autumn/winter) that can help you narrow down which colors tend to work in your favor.
Either way, even just knowing your general undertone, warm or cool, can help you pick outfits with confidence instead of guessing.
That's everything I've got for now. I hope this helps you feel a little more confident and prepared, whether or not you consider yourself a girly-girl :)
